Remote Funded Tech Sector Momentum Trader — Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles, CA
Maverick Trading
Concentrated tech-sector book — semis, software, AI infrastructure, mega-cap leaders.
Trade the open from California, be done by lunch — the time zone trade is one of the cleanest in the country.
A tech sector momentum trader at Maverick runs a concentrated book within US technology equities — semiconductors, software, cloud infrastructure, AI-adjacent names, and the mega-cap tech leaders. The role rewards traders who already follow tech earnings cycles, product release dynamics, and the rotation between sub-sectors.
Trading from Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles is the second-largest financial center in the country by a number of measures — Capital Group, TCW, PIMCO, Oaktree, and dozens of independent funds are headquartered in the LA/Pasadena/Newport Beach corridor. Pacific Time means the market opens before most of LA wakes up; the trade-off is a clean afternoon free by 1pm. Many of our West Coast traders prefer this rhythm explicitly.
Local ecosystem: UCLA Anderson, USC Marshall, Caltech, and a deep entertainment-finance ecosystem.
Time zone: PT — the NYSE opens at 6:30am local for traders based in Los Angeles.
What You'll Trade
US tech equities across the cap spectrum: mega-cap leaders for stability and option liquidity, mid-cap semis and software for momentum, and selective small-cap names with real fundamental stories rather than meme volume. Sector ETFs (XLK, SOXX, IGV, SMH) for thematic exposure and hedging.
Day-to-Day
- Morning: scan the sector for relative-strength leaders and laggards versus QQQ and SOXX
- Identify entries on momentum continuation setups — pullbacks to rising moving averages, breakouts from base structures
- Manage existing positions with trailing stops; tech volatility means winners need room and losers need to be cut fast
- Track earnings calendar within the sector — concentration risk is high during tech earnings weeks
Risk Profile
Tech is a high-beta sector — concentrated tech books move 1.5–2x the S&P on bad days. Maverick caps sector concentration at the portfolio level and requires either defined hedges (puts, ETF shorts) or smaller individual position sizes to compensate. We do not run leveraged-tech books.
Who Succeeds in This Role
- Traders who already read tech earnings, product launches, and conference circuits as part of their daily routine
- People who can distinguish a real fundamental story from a momentum chase
- Candidates who understand sub-sector rotation — semis lead, software follows, etc.
- Traders comfortable with high volatility and high single-day drawdowns
Why This Role Exists at Maverick
Tech is the most-traded sector in US markets and one of the most volatile. Maverick funds focused tech traders because concentrated expertise in a single sector — knowing the names, the cycle, the customers — outperforms diversified-but-shallow approaches.
